The award has been won by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi since 2008. Of course, both are included in this year’s list. They are joined by other usual suspects such as Luis Suárez and Neymar.
Champions League and La Liga winners Real Madrid dominates the list with a hefty seven nominees. Real Madrid star Ronaldo is joined on the roster by Karim Benzema, Isco, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
Together with two players of FC Barcelona (Messi and Suárez) and two of Atlético Madrid (Griezmann and Oblak), the Spanish La Liga is represented by 11 nominees, which is more than any other league (English Premier League – 7, Italian Serie A – 5, French Ligue 1 – 4, German Bundesliga – 3).
The Euro Player Index can be used to evaluate the nominees list in several ways. There are 14 players from our top-30 nominated, including all 7 candidates from Real Madrid. Also, the delta between the EPI of last year and today shows that some nominees, such as Kylian Mbappé and Dries Mertens, have developed greatly over the past 12 months. While there are also players whose performance is not in accordance with their nomination, including Mats Hummels, Leonardo Bonucci and Philippe Countinho.
Missing candidates from EPI top-30
Based on the Euro Player Index, we also look at the players which are part of our top-30 but absent from the list of nominees. From our top-10, Rakitic (FC Barcelona) and Higuaín (Juventus) are missing. Furthermore, given their development over the last year, Remiqz would have nominated both full backs of Chelsea (Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso).
